The African News Innovation Challenge (ANIC) is the continent’s largest fund for supporting new media experimentation and digital news startups in everything from data driven journalism and investigative reporting, to newsroom management, audience engagement, digital convergence, and media business models.
Launched in 2012 as an annual event, ANIC is part of the African Media Initiative’s wider digital innovation programme that includes support for a pan-African network of HacksHackers chapters, data journalism bootcamps, newsroom-based pilot projects, and a fellowship programme that embeds coders in newsrooms to help rethink and reinvent the way that media work.
Upande Ltd - Team behind Virtual Kenya platform has submitted three entries in the Africa News Innovation Challenge. These entries as varied as they are all have one thing accessibility of Virtual Kenya rich data and analysis.
The entries are:-
1. Spatial news aggregator API: A news data harvesting, spatial analysis and dissemination based platform with an API output.
2. Lokal: Lokal is an android based mobile app that reads and writes to an existing thematic/news oriented database based on user location and query.
3. Cartogram Engine: Is a custom application to generate animated cartograms in order to strengthen visualization of existing and new data published through VirtualKenya.org.
