KENYA WATER SOURCES MASHUP
The National Water Services Regulatory Board (Wasreb) was established to anchor reforms in Kenya's water sector. The mandate of the Board is to ensure the provision of efficient, affordable and sustainable water services.
Wasreb sets rules and enforces standards that guide Kenya's sector towards ensuring that consumers are protected and have access to efficient, adequate, affordable and sustainable services.
Further Kenya has 8 regional Water Services Boards (WSBs) in charge of asset management through Service Provision Agreements (SPAs) .These are
-
The Athi Water Services Board (AWSB)
-
Lake Victoria North Water Services Board
-
Lake Victoria South Water Services Board
-
Rift Valley Water Services Board Kenya
-
Coast Water Services Board
-
Northern Water Services Board
-
Athi Water Services Board
-
Tana Water Services Board
Further there were initially about 55 Water Services Providers that have since grown to 117
In urban areas 51% of the population used shared latrines while In rural areas, open defecation was estimated to be still practised by 18% of the population
Using data from K.O.D.I,we have most Counties using :
-
Either Springs Wells or Boreholes
-
Followed by Streams
-
And a small majority in the Nairobi, Taita Taveta, Kiambu and Kericho having Piped Water.
-
Nyandarua, Lamu and Nyeri alos have a considerable population using Jabia/Harested rain water
-
Lastly Kajiado, Mombasa,Nairobi and Nakuru getting a considerable amount from Water Vendors
Provision through the Water Services Board has greatly improved access to better quality of water supply but as seen quite a lot still remains to be done so more people will have access to treated safe water for consumption
